Sarasota County
Sarasota County Government and local citizens have made the conservation of natural spaces for current and future generations one of their primary goals over the past decade. Sarasota County's unique parks system plans proactively and prepares for future population growth and the resulting demands for centers of recreation. At the same time, it successfully maintains more than 150 parks and centers within the county, its barrier islands and the cities of Sarasota, North Port and Venice. These efforts are funded through tax dollars, bonding, impact fees, user fees and grants.

Natural areas are diminishing. To ensure their continued availability, Sarasota County's voter-approved and taxpayer-funded Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program is protecting and preserving additional unique natural lands.

An oversight committee of community representatives monitors this program. Since the program's inception in 1999, the county has acquired more than 16,000 acres that preserve natural habitat for wildlife, protect valuable watersheds and provide nature-based recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.
